Broken Barrel California Oak is a Kentucky straight bourbon in a 750ml bottle, bottled at 44% ABV. It was distilled in Owensboro from a mash bill of 70% corn, 21% rye and 9% malted barley, and aged for a minimum of two years.
Rather than going into a second barrel, the bourbon is finished with broken staves added to the tanked spirit. The stave blend, which founder Seth Benhaim prints on the bottle, is 80% Central Coast Cabernet Sauvignon wine barrel staves and 20% French oak. It won a Gold Medal at the 2020 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
The nose is marshmallow and dark fruit. The palate shows a cherry centre, caramel sweetness and dates, and the finish is oak-heavy and tannic.
