Octomore 8.1 is the first of four editions in the Masterclass 8 series from Bruichladdich, a heavily peated single malt at 167 ppm, bottled at 59.3% ABV in a 70cl bottle. It was distilled in 2008 from 100% Scottish barley and matured for eight years in first-fill American oak casks that previously held bourbon. The whisky was matured separately and married at the end.
The nose offers smoke, tar, peat, candied orange, pepper, chocolate, vanilla and lemon tart. The palate has a soft texture, fruity and smoky with a little salt, vanilla, marzipan and walnut. The finish is dry peat smoke, iodine and fine oak sweetness.
