This is Octomore 8.4, an 8 year old heavily peated single malt from Bruichladdich on Islay, bottled at 58.7% ABV in a 70cl bottle. It was made from 100% Scottish barley and peated to 170 ppm. The spirit was distilled in 2009 and bottled in 2017, non-chill-filtered and without added colour, in an outturn of 12,000 bottles.
It matured on Islay in 20% first-fill virgin oak and 80% first-fill ex-bourbon casks, then spent time in second-fill virgin oak from the French cooperage Radoux.
The nose opens with gentle smoke, then honeyed malt, banana bread and toffee popcorn. The palate is rich and honeyed, with leather, praline, coconut, lemon and a hint of sea air. The finish brings clove, aniseed and coffee grounds fading to peat smoke.
