Octomore 17.1 is a heavily peated Islay single malt from Bruichladdich, made from 100% Scottish mainland Concerto barley of the 2019 harvest and malted to 81.0 ppm. It was distilled in 2020 and matured for its full five years in first-fill bourbon barrels. It is bottled at 119.4 proof.
The .1 releases are always matured in bourbon or American whiskey barrels, and the flavour changes each year with the weather on Islay's coast.
The nose opens on sweet malt and vanilla custard, with toasted coconut, butterscotch and citrus peel, and peat embers carried on a salty breeze. The palate is viscous and sweet, with pear drops, malt syrup and waves of earthy smoke. The finish is long, fading from sweetness to dry minerality, then peat smoke and salt.
