A 10 year old Bunnahabhain from Islay, bottled by Gordon & MacPhail for its Discovery range at 43%, with no added colouring. It shows the heavily peated side of a distillery that mainly makes unpeated spirit, and it was matured in sherry casks.
Peat smoke sits alongside a bright, citrus and maritime character, with vanilla, toffee and light fruitcake notes.
On the nose, vanilla cream and meringue meet lemon cream, with cut grass, seaweed, brine and a light peat smoke. The palate brings candied lime and lemon, stewed pears and blackcurrants, then milk chocolate turning to leather with a touch of liquorice. The finish is long and soft, with fine wood, tobacco and the memory of glowing embers.
