Bunnahabhain – 17 Year Old Mòine Triple Cask Finish - Fèis Ìle 2023 is a single malt whisky from Bunnahabhain (Islay). Aged 17 years, bottled at 52.6% ABV, 70cl. Finished in oloroso Hogsheads & Rum Barrels.
Situated on the Isle of Islay, Bunnahabhain Distillery was founded in 1881 and relied on the sea trade, receiving supplies by boat and sending seafarers back to the mainland with casks full of their special whisky. In the 1930s Bunnahabhain had a short closure before a new road was built to the distillery in 1960, adding another form of transport link to obtain supplies.
Due to the increasing demand, a second pair of stills were installed at the distillery in 1963 and by 1979, the classic 12-year-old single malt was introduced worldwide. 1993 saw the last boat being docked as the road to the distillery was now the most suitable route for receiving ingredients and supplies.
In the new decade, Burn Stewart merged with Distell which brought more investment into the brand and distillery, Bunnahabhain's portfolio of products was extended and the packaging was further modernised, as well as a Visitor Centre which opened in 2021.
One of the releases for Fèis Ìle 2023, this mòine (meaning smoky in Gaelic) is a marriage of three peated single malts.
The first was distilled in February 2004 and laid down in American Oak casks before being transferred into first-fill Oloroso hogsheads in July 2013. The second was distilled in November 2004 and fully matured in ex-bourbon barrels, while the third was distilled in February 2004 in American Oak casks before being finished in rum barrels from December 2017 onwards.
This dram spent 17 years maturing before being bottled at 52.6% ABV for Féis Ìle 2023, one of only 1,740 bottles available at the distillery only.
