Founded in 1608, Bushmills is officially recognized as the world's oldest licensed whiskey distillery, nestled in the small village of Bushmills along Northern Ireland's rugged Antrim coast. The distillery's privileged location near the Giant's Causeway provides it with pristine water from Saint Columb's Rill, a tributary of the River Bush that flows over basalt rock, contributing to the distinctive character of its spirits.
Through more than four centuries of continuous whiskey-making, Bushmills has maintained its traditional triple-distillation process, setting it apart from most Scottish single malts which are typically double-distilled. The distillery's core range of Irish whiskeys is produced using both malted and unmalted barley, with their single malts being crafted exclusively from malted barley. Despite its long history and numerous changes in ownership, including its current ownership by Jose Cuervo, Bushmills has preserved its traditional methods while continuously innovating within the Irish whiskey category.
