A 38 year old Islay single malt from Caol Ila, filled in September 1980 and bottled in September 2018 for Douglas Laing's Xtra Old Particular range. It comes from refill hogshead 12785 at a natural cask strength of 53.9%, and just 177 bottles were filled, each 70cl.
The nose brings sweet smoked barley with streaky bacon, golden syrup, caramel and salty seaweed. On the palate, spicy Seville marmalade gives way to peat smoke, oat biscuits, buttery pancakes and charred oak. The finish is long, with smoke, dark peat and damp earth, plus sorbet lemon and plum jam.
