This Caol Ila is a nine-year-old single malt from Islay, distilled in 2017 and bottled by Signatory Vintage at 40% in its Very Cloudy range. That range is made up of small batches of two to five casks and is bottled without chill-filtration or added colouring.
It matured in refill bourbon hogsheads, which let the character of the spirit come through without a strong influence from the wood.
The nose is smoky and ashy, with coal, menthol, malted barley, citrus and liquorice. The palate is oily and peated, with tar, salted preserved lemon, camphor and white fruit. The finish is long, smoky and oily.
