Royal Salute 21 Year Old is a blended Scotch whisky in which every malt and grain whisky has spent at least 21 years in oak, including sherry butts and ex-bourbon barrels. It is bottled at 40% in a hand-crafted porcelain flagon.
The brand was created in 1953 to mark the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, and its name refers to the 21-gun salute fired from the Tower of London on royal occasions. The blend is overseen by Master Blender Sandy Hyslop.
The nose brings orchard fruit, orange marmalade, wild honey and vanilla custard. On the palate come toffee, butterscotch and gingerbread, then dark chocolate and sultanas. The finish is long, with oak tannins, roasted hazelnuts and a trace of smoke.
