This is a Marsala Vergine Riserva from the Sicilian house of Florio, which has made Marsala for nearly two hundred years. It is a fortified wine from the 2006 vintage, made from Grillo.
The grapes are picked by hand from mid-September, left to ripen fully on the vine for a high concentration of sugar and polyphenols. Fermentation takes place in concrete, and the wine then spends 18 years in small oak casks sited about 150 metres from the sea.
The colour is old gold. The nose is layered, moving from spice to cereal notes and lightly toasted fruit. On the palate it is savoury, with persistent, finely integrated tannin.
