Gaja Sperss 2015 Barolo

A Barolo from Gaja, made from grapes grown in the Marenca-Rivette subzone of the Barolo DOCG. The Sperss vineyard was bought in 1988 and has vines of about 55 years. Fermentation takes place with wild yeast in steel tanks, followed by malolactic fermentation. The wine then matures for 12 months in 225-litre oak barrels, 30% new and the rest one to two years old, followed by a further 12 months in large oak casks. The wine is aromatic, crisp and fresh on the nose, with thyme, rosemary, citrus spice, clove, black pepper and dark berries. The palate is dominated by red tones, with plum, dark cherry and wild blackberry, and the wine is deep, tannic and complex.
