The Glenlivet Distillery, situated in the remote Livet valley of Banffshire in the heart of Speyside, was established by George Smith in 1824 as one of the first distilleries to operate under the Excise Act of that year. Its reputation grew to such an extent that many neighbouring distilleries adopted the 'Glenlivet' appellation, leading to a legal agreement in 1884 that reserved the use of 'The Glenlivet' exclusively for George Smith's original distillery.
