Bacalta is a Glenmorangie single malt, bottled at 46% and finished in custom-made Malmsey Madeira casks. The name is Gaelic for 'baked', a nod to the sun-dried sweetness of the wine. It is the eighth release in the Private Edition series.
The idea grew from the distillery's Madeira finish, which more than 20 years ago was the first whisky in the world to be finished in Madeira casks.
The nose has sweet honey, ripe apricots and white chocolate, and a little water brings out a rancio note with baked bread and malt biscuits. The palate offers mint toffee, baked fruit, caramelised oranges, honey, almonds and dates. The finish is syrupy, with marzipan, white pepper, honeydew melon and creamy fudge.
