Horse Soldier Straight Bourbon is a high-rye bourbon made from a mash of 65% corn, 30% rye and 5% barley. It is drawn from small batches of 4-year-old whiskey aged in new charred American oak, and bottled at 43.5% without chill filtering. It is distilled and aged in Ohio, then bottled in St. Petersburg, Florida by American Freedom Distillery, a company founded by retired US Army Green Berets of ODA 595.
Each bottle is formed in a mould made from steel recovered from the World Trade Center, in honour of the ODA 595 team that rode into Afghanistan on horseback after 9/11.
The nose offers toffee, sweet corn and apple with caramel and custard. On the palate come vanilla, toasted corn and honey, with nutmeg and spiced oak.
