Hwayo X. Premium is a rice whisky from the Hwayo Distillery in the Yeoju region of South Korea, in a 500ml bottle at 41% ABV. It is made from 100% locally grown Korean Japonica rice and bedrock water, and was marketed internationally as a single grain rice whisky.
The spirit is single-distilled under vacuum at low temperatures. It matures for five years in American oak, ex-bourbon and virgin, then spends six months in traditional Korean onggi earthenware pots.
The nose brings vanilla, banana, tinned peaches, lemongrass and mint. The palate is buttery caramel, brown sugar, toasted grains and coconut, and the finish carries blackcurrant, oak and gentle spice.
