J&B Rare is a blended Scotch whisky from Justerini & Brooks, made from 42 single malt and grain whiskies, all matured in oak casks for at least three years. The heart malts come from Knockando, Auchroisk, Strathmill and Glen Spey, and are aged for longer than the minimum.
The blend was created in 1932 by master blender Charlie Julian for launch in the United States as Prohibition ended, with a lighter profile aimed at American drinkers. It is bottled at 40% (80 proof) in a 750ml bottle, in a green bottle with a yellow label.
The nose is grassy and nutty, with toffee apple, cedar, orange zest and malt sweetness. The palate has malt, light spice, fruit salad and vanilla, and the finish is clean and short, with gentle oak.
