James E. Pepper 1776 is a straight bourbon bottled at 100 proof (50%). The mash bill is 60% corn, 36% rye and 4% malted barley, and the whiskey is aged for three to four years. It is unfiltered.
The whiskey is distilled at the Lawrenceburg Distillery in Indiana or by Bardstown Bourbon Co. in Kentucky, then cut to proof and hand bottled at the James E. Pepper Distillery using water from its limestone well. The label revives a Pepper family brand dating from 1780, which the Colonel called Old '1776'.
It is described as rich bourbon sweetness with rye spice, showing vanilla, honey, cloves and chocolate.
