James E. Pepper Decanter Barrel Proof is a Kentucky straight bourbon, distilled and bottled at the James E. Pepper Distillery in Lexington. It is bottled uncut and unfiltered straight from the barrel, so strength varies by batch, with 52.7% ABV the most commonly documented.
It is made from the distillery's oldest stocks and a high-rye mash bill that includes malted rye, aged in new charred Kentucky oak that was air-seasoned for 18 to 24 months. The decanter recreates a 1945 James E. Pepper design.
Expect rye spice and caramelised oak, then dark cherry and vanilla. The finish is long and warming, with toasted wood and peppery warmth.
