Kavalan Distillery Select is a single malt whisky from Yilan County, Taiwan, bottled at 43% ABV in a 750ml bottle. It won a Double Gold Medal at the 2021 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
The spirit is double-distilled in copper pot stills from malted barley imported from Scotland, then matured in refill casks. Taiwan's heat and humidity mean an angel's share of 7 to 15 per cent a year, against roughly 2 per cent in Scotland.
The nose offers ripe mango, pineapple and banana, with vanilla and butterscotch. The palate is soft and creamy, with toffee, caramel, stone fruit and cherry. The finish is long, with butterscotch, vanilla and a little baking spice.
