This is a 12 year old Lagavulin from the 2024 Special Releases, known as Fireside Tales. It comes in a 70cl bottle at 57.4% ABV.
The whisky was matured in refill American oak hogsheads and refill European oak butts, which bring out a sweeter, spicier side of the Islay distillery while the peat smoke remains.
The nose is gentle and drying, with bonfire smoke, wood ash and carbolic soap, plus hints of rowan jelly and unripe redcurrants. The palate is creamy and sweet at first, then drying, with a little salt and tingling smoke. The finish is long and smoky, with warming spice.
