Lagavulin 16 Year Old is a peated Islay single malt Scotch whisky, aged in oak casks for at least sixteen years and bottled at 43% ABV. It comes from Lagavulin Distillery near Port Ellen on the Isle of Islay, founded in 1816 by John Johnston.
The long maturation is said to give the peat smoke its integration, intense but not raw, with a rich sweetness underneath.
The nose is intense peat smoke with iodine and seaweed over deep sweetness. The palate is full and rich, with dry peat smoke, a gentle sweetness, sea and salt and touches of wood. The finish is long and peat-filled, with salt and seaweed.
