This is the 2022 Distiller's Edition from Lagavulin, a heavily peated Islay single malt. The whisky is 16 years old, distilled in 2007 and bottled in 2022 at 43% ABV in a 750ml bottle. The distillery was established in 1816, and the Distiller's Edition series has been released since 1997.
It was first matured in refill American and European oak, then finished in Pedro Ximénez-seasoned American oak casks. The finish adds sherry sweetness to the maritime smoke.
The nose is earthy peat, fig, vanilla bean, sherry, olive brine and sea spray. On the palate come maritime smoke, salted caramel, dark chocolate, dried fruit and rich sherry. The finish is long, with oak spice and lingering peat.
