Laphroaig – 16 Year Old 1998 - Anam Na H-Alba is a single malt whisky from Laphroaig (Islay). Aged 16 years, bottled at 51.2% ABV, 70cl.
Laphroaig is a substantial distillery with 7 stills and a capacity of over 3 million litres per year! The distillery was built in 1815 by brothers Alexander and Donald Johnston, the distillery remained under D. Johnston & Co until the 1960s. In the 20th century, the distillery saw a rise to fame when Donald's great-grandson Ian Hunter took over. When Ian died, he left the distillery to his secretary, Bessie Williamson who had been the acting manager during Ian's extensive international sales trips. Bessie retired in 1972 and the distillery was granted a Royal Warrant in 1994 from HRH The Prince of Wales at the time. This was also the year that Friends of Laphroaig was founded, which to this day has around 640,000 members.
This is a single cask Laphroaig which was distilled in 1998 and left to mature in a refill sherry cask for 16 years.
Bottled in 2014, this is one of only 186 produced.
