Laphroaig 25 Year Old is an Islay single malt matured in two kinds of cask: second-fill European oak Oloroso sherry casks and ex-American oak bourbon barrels. Both were filled with new-make Laphroaig spirit from the start. It is bottled at 45.1% ABV in a 75cl bottle and has a bright red-gold colour.
The nose is closed at bottling strength, with a rich, sweet scent. A little water brings out sherry sweetness, then Islay peat, ripe fruit and a background of salt. The palate opens with a burst of peat, tempered by sherry sweetness and turning to spicy apple. The finish is very long and warming, with a distinct tang of Islay.
