Laphroaig 33 Year Old is the first release in the Strong Characters series, a limited-edition collection dedicated to people who shaped the distillery. This opening chapter honours Donald Johnston, the co-founder who established Laphroaig in 1815. It comes in a 70cl bottle with illustrations by the British artist Bill Bragg and a booklet about Johnston.
The single malt was made from American oak ex-bourbon casks and European oak sherry-seasoned hogsheads, and matured for more than three decades.
The nose offers creme brulee, stewed rhubarb, apple custard, fudge, heather honey, sourdough and sea spray. A gentle sherry influence adds fruit cake and spice, alongside smoked ham, cured mackerel and herbal, grassy peat smoke. Water brings the peat forward.
