This is an Islay single malt from Laphroaig, the third book in the Ian Hunter Story series. It was distilled in 1987 and matured for 33 years in refill ex-bourbon barrels. It was bottled on 25 January 2021 at a cask strength of 49.9%, non-chill-filtered, from 4,800 bottles.
The series honours Ian Hunter, the last Johnston-family owner and manager of the distillery, who ran it from 1908 to 1944. This chapter recalls his fight to protect the Kilbride Stream, which supplies Laphroaig's water.
The nose brings old oak and peat smoke with dried mango, honey and a medicinal edge. The palate offers smoked honey, polished wood, tropical fruit and sea salt, and the finish is long, with peat, oak spice and fading sweetness.
