Laphroaig – 34 Year Old - The Ian Hunter Story - Book 4: Malt Master is a single malt whisky from Laphroaig (Islay). Aged 34 years, bottled at 46.2% ABV, 70cl. Laphroaig is a substantial distillery with 7 stills and a capacity of over 3 million litres per year! The distillery was built in 1815 by brothers Alexander and Donald Johnston, the distillery remained under D. Johnston & Co until the 1960s. In the 20th century, the distillery saw a rise to fame when Donald's great-grandson Ian Hunter took over. When Ian died, he left the distillery to his secretary, Bessie Williamson who had been the acting manager during Ian's extensive international sales trips. Bessie retired in 1972 and the distillery was granted a Royal Warrant in 1994 from HRH The Prince of Wales at the time. This was also the year that Friends of Laphroaig was founded, which to this day has around 640,000 members. This is a 34-year-old cask-strength bottling from the 1987 vintage. This bottle forms the fourth chapter of the story of Ian Hunter and celebrates the man who introduced the iconic American white oak barrels to the whisky-making at Laphroaig. It is said that it was Ian who made Laphroaig what it is today.
