This is a 35 year old Laphroaig from Islay, the second chapter in the Strong Characters series. The limited edition is dedicated to Dugald Johnston, who inherited the distillery in 1847, and his story is told in illustrations by Bill Bragg.
The whisky matured in American oak barrels and hogsheads and is bottled at 43.8% in a 70cl bottle.
The nose opens sweet with fresh pastry, apple and cherry, recalling Bakewell tart or streusel. Smoke and spice lead on the palate, which is creamy with delicate raisin. Aniseed lingers in the finish, with a peppery tingle before the peat smoke returns.
