Laphroaig Elements L1.0 is the first release in Laphroaig's experimental Elements series, a non-chill filtered Islay single malt bottled at 58.6% in a 70cl bottle. It is made from 100% Islay-grown malt (Concerto and Optic) and matured in ex-bourbon casks.
Rather than a cask finish, the experiment lies in distillation: vintage 8.5-tonne and modern 5.5-tonne mash tuns, and a 50/50 blend of cloudy and semi-cloudy wort.
The nose brings bonfire embers, smoky bacon, sea salt, strawberry jam and charred pineapple. The palate is peppery and full-bodied, with tropical fruit, cloves and liquorice, and the long, warming finish carries peat smoke and soft maritime sweetness.
