This is a 33 year old Islay single malt from Laphroaig, bottled at 43.8% in a 70cl bottle. It is the first release in the Strong Characters series, which honours people from the distillery's history.
Chapter 1 is dedicated to Donald Johnston, the elder of the two brothers who founded Laphroaig in 1815. The packaging carries illustrations by British artist Bill Bragg. The whisky was matured in American oak ex-bourbon casks and European oak sherry-seasoned hogsheads, combining peat smoke with sweetness and a gentle sherry influence.
The nose is creamy fudge with honey and a touch of sea salt. The palate brings stewed fruit and vanilla crème brûlée, and the smoky finish carries savoury notes of cured meat.
