This is a 16 year old Ledaig, the peated malt of the Tobermory distillery on the Isle of Mull. Murray McDavid bottled it in its Benchmark series from a 2009 distillation.
For its last four years the whisky matured in red wine barriques from the Quinta dos Frades estate in Portugal's Douro valley. It is bottled at cask strength, 57.5% ABV, non-chill-filtered and without added colour, in a limited release of 589 bottles.
The nose has violets, dried cranberries and a savoury note of smoked meat. The palate brings maritime peat smoke, dark chocolate and juicy berries. The finish is long, with cigar leaf and sweet spices.
