Macallan Red 73 Year Old belongs to the Macallan Red Collection, a range honouring the distillery's founder, Alexander Reid, whose surname means 'the red one' in Scots. It was laid down in November 1950 and comes in a bespoke oak presentation box, each bottle hand signed and numbered by Lead Whisky Maker Euan Kennedy.
The nose combines aged oak, apricot preserves, liquorice and treacle pie with baked apple, nutmeg and exotic fruit. The palate shows dates, sweet wood smoke, bittersweet toffee and aromatic herbs, with a fruity, salty note recalling Palo Cortado. The finish carries soft tannins, gentle spice, treacle and a persistent minerality.
