Mackinlay's Shackleton 'The Discovery' Edition Rare Old Highland Malt Whisky (75cl, 47.3%)

Mackinlay's Shackleton 'The Discovery' Edition is a blended malt Scotch whisky from Whyte & Mackay, recreating the Mackinlay's whisky that Sir Ernest Shackleton took on his Nimrod expedition of 1907 to 1909. Crates left behind at the Cape Royds hut were found encased in ice in 2007. Master blender Richard Paterson rebuilt it from the analysis of three recovered bottles: sherry-cask matured and lightly peated, at 47.3% ABV in a 750ml bottle. The blend includes rare 1983 Glen Mhor among Speyside, Island and Highland malts, and the first edition was made in 50,000 bottles. The nose is soft, with crushed apple, pear, pineapple, oak shavings and vanilla. On the palate, gentle bonfire smoke gives way to toffee, treacle and pecan nuts.
