This is Maker's Mark 46 at cask strength: a wheated Kentucky straight bourbon finished with seared virgin French oak staves and bottled without being proofed down. Strength runs from 107 to 114 proof depending on the batch, in a 750ml bottle.
The finishing barrels are fitted with ten staves of the type designated Stave Profile No. 46, which gives the bourbon its name. The mashbill is 70% corn, 16% soft red winter wheat and 14% malted barley.
Vanilla, caramel, figs, raisins and baking spice show on the nose. The palate brings cherry, dried apple and semi-sweet chocolate, then allspice, nutmeg and cardamom. The finish is long and drier, with wood, tobacco and pecans.
