Maker's Mark FAE-01 is the third release in the Wood Finishing Series, after 2019's RC6 and 2020's SE4xPR5. It is a limited-release, cask-strength wheated bourbon from Loretto, Kentucky, bottled between 110.3 and 110.6 proof in a 750ml bottle. The mash is 70% corn, 16% wheat and 14% malted barley.
Fully matured bourbon is finished with 10 virgin toasted American oak staves, seared on one side and left raw on the other. It is the first time Maker's Mark has used a raw-wood stave. FAE stands for Fatty Acid Esters, which stay in the non-chill-filtered whisky.
The nose is heavy wood, dark fruit and tobacco. The palate offers deep, dried dark fruits with tobacco and barrel extractives. The finish is creamy and lingering, with figgy notes.
