Mars Iwai Rye Style is a Japanese blended whisky bottled at 50% in a 750ml bottle, with no age statement. It combines Iwai whisky from the Shinshu distillery in Nagano with straight rye whiskey made in Kentucky from 95% rye.
The Iwai part is double-distilled from corn and unpeated malted barley and aged in ex-bourbon barrels. The Kentucky rye is aged in new charred American oak. The blend rests briefly in stainless steel before bottling.
The nose is faint spent fireworks with red fruit, hazelnut skin, hot cocoa, marasca cherry and rosemary resin. The palate moves from cocoa and baking spice to black tea and bright fruit, and the finish brings gooseberries and light char.
