Mars Tsunuki Peated is a Japanese single malt from Tsunuki Distillery in Minamisatsuma, Kagoshima, the second distillery of Hombo Shuzo, built in 2016. It is made from peated malted barley, with peat levels of 20 to 50 ppm, and bottled at 50% in a 75cl bottle without chill-filtration.
The whisky was distilled in the winters of 2016 and 2017 and bottled in 2020, with an outturn of 2,100 bottles. It was matured mainly in ex-bourbon oak, with some sherry casks.
The nose brings smoked maple syrup, wet campfire and dried apricot, with yellow fruit, pepper and vanilla. On the palate peat is prominent, alongside sandalwood and a mineral freshness. The finish is drying, with browned butter, herbs and a hint of menthol.
