Michter's US*1 Small Batch Sour Mash is an American whiskey, bottled at 43% ABV in a 70cl bottle. It is made by adding some of the mash from the previous fermentation to the next batch, much as a baker uses sourdough. Its grain choice means it fits neither the rye nor the bourbon category.
The original Sour Mash was the distillery's most popular product through the 1970s and 1980s. It left the market in 1989 and returned in 2012 as part of the US*1 line.
Tasting notes describe warm toasted burnt sugar with spice, sweet smoked fruit, candied cherries and honeyed vanilla. It starts like a bourbon and ends like a rye.
