New Riff 6 Year Old Malted Rye is a bottled-in-bond Kentucky rye whiskey at 50% ABV, matured for a minimum of six years in new charred American oak. It comes from New Riff Distilling in Newport, a distillery founded by Ken Lewis in 2014.
The mash bill is 100% malted rye, fermented as an open-top sour mash. The grain is malted before mashing, which the distillery describes as making this a malted whiskey first and a rye second. It is non-chill-filtered.
The palate is rounded and bready, with malt, dark caramel and toasted grain, while cinnamon, pepper and dried citrus build towards a long, warming oak finish.
