Nikka The Grain is a blended grain whisky at 48% ABV, released in 2023 as the third and final instalment of the Nikka Discovery Series ahead of the company's 90th anniversary in 2024. Production was 20,000 bottles in total.
It draws on four distilleries: old Coffey Grain and Coffey Malt from Miyagikyo, old Coffey reserves from the closed Nishinomiya distillery, and new barley grain from the shochu distilleries Moji and Satsumatsukasa, whose spirit Nikka had not used in whisky before. Corn and rye grains were matured in new American oak.
The nose is marmalade, cider, beeswax, vanilla and toasted grain. The palate is creamy, with almond, coconut milk, vanilla, liquorice, cinnamon and ginger, and the finish is smooth, with mint, acacia honey and floral notes.
