Nikka Yoichi Single Malt is a Japanese whisky from the Yoichi distillery on Hokkaido, the first Nikka site, founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru. He applied Scottish techniques there, including coal-fired pot stills. It carries no age statement and is bottled at 45% ABV.
The nose leads with peat smoke and salty sea brine, followed by candied citrus peel, nutmeg, dried fruit and honeyed malt. The palate is medium-bodied and oily, pairing pear, melon and pineapple with smoky peat, salted caramel and walnuts. The finish is long and warming, with peat and spice giving way to dry oak and citrus peel.
