Nikka Yoichi Single Malt

This is a single malt from the Yoichi distillery on Hokkaido, the first distillery Nikka built, in 1934. Its founder, Masataka Taketsuru, chose the site because its environment resembled Scotland, where he had learned to make whisky. The spirit is distilled over direct coal fires, which gives it peaty notes and smokiness. Ageing by the sea adds a briny hint, carried on the sea breeze.
