Nikka Yoichi is a Japanese single malt with no age statement, bottled at 45% ABV in a 750ml bottle. It comes from Nikka's first distillery, on the Hokkaido coast, founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru.
The malt is peated and vatted from whisky matured mostly in ex-bourbon oak. The distillery still heats its pot stills with a hand-stoked coal fire.
The nose is full-bodied, with mellow peat, smoke and soot, then candied citrus, black liquorice and spice. The palate is firm and powerful, with peat, melon, kiwi, almond and walnut. The finish is long and silky, with ripe pear, apple and salty freshness.
