A high-rye Kentucky straight bourbon bottled at 57% (114 proof), made at the Jim Beam distillery in Clermont. The mashbill is 63% corn, 27% rye and 10% malted barley, and the spirit is aged in new charred American oak barrels.
The brand name goes back to Basil Hayden Sr., honoured by his grandson Colonel Raymond B. Hayden when the label was established in the 1880s.
The nose is sweet and spicy, with tobacco leaf, barrel char, old wood and candied sugar. The palate brings rye spice, a nutty peanut-brittle note, pepper and leather. The finish is long, with oak, vanilla, warmth and a little nuttiness.
