Opus One 2023 is a Bordeaux-style red from Oakville in Napa Valley, the single wine made by the partnership of Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild and Robert Mondavi.
The blend is led by Cabernet Sauvignon at 81%, with 7% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot and 1% Malbec. It had 22 days of skin contact and 19 months in French oak, with a portion of the wine also handled in amphora. The season was cool, with harvest running from mid-September to mid-October.
Red fruit, cherry blossom and dried violet come first, with vanilla, graphite, forest floor and tobacco. The palate is balanced, with silky tannins, elderberry, cassis, black pepper and chocolate-covered orange peel. The finish brings red plum and sweet oak.
