Port Ellen 11th Annual Release is a 32 year old Islay single malt, distilled in 1979 and bottled in 2011 at a natural cask strength of 53.9%. It is the eleventh Port Ellen in Diageo's Special Releases series, with 2,988 bottles released.
The nose begins with fresh walnuts, almonds, apples and butter, plus cigar smoke, then moves to ink, coal stove, shellfish and leather polish. With water, brine and seawater come through.
The palate is acrid, ashy and lemony, with marzipan, olive oil and pine sap, and later tangerine and bergamot. The finish is long, sweet and sour and ashy, with a briny, almondy aftertaste.
