This is the 16th release of Port Ellen, a 37 year old Islay single malt distilled in 1978 and bottled in September 2016 at a natural cask strength of 55.2%. The distillery fell silent in 1983, and at the time of release this was the oldest Port Ellen bottling to date. There are 2,940 bottles in 70cl.
The whisky matured in refill American oak hogsheads and refill European oak butts.
The nose is soft and smoky, slightly sooty, with beetroot, chamois leather, bilberry and mandarin. The palate brings ash, scorched earth, bilberry, liquorice and a little vanilla. The finish is brown sugar and toasty oak, like the caramelised top of a crème brûlée.
