A 2009 Vintage Port from Quinta do Retiro Novo, an estate in the Rio Torto Valley in the Douro, owned by the Port house Wiese & Krohn. It is made from Touriga Nacional, Touriga Francesa and Tinta Barroca, and bottled at 20% in a 75cl bottle.
The vineyards have steep slopes, low yields and old vines. The 2009 growing season was warm, with a hot August bringing the grapes to excellent ripeness and yields below normal.
The nose shows ripe blackberry, blackcurrant and bramble with plum, sweet spice and chocolate. The palate is rich and full-bodied, with dark fruit, structured tannins, balancing acidity and notes of chocolate and caramel. The finish is long and warming, with dark berries and sweet spice.
