Rare Character Hurst Knoll 7 Year Old is a Kentucky straight rye bottled at 50.5% ABV in a 750ml bottle. It is a blend of high-rye Kentucky straight rye barrels, not a single barrel, aged for a minimum of seven years and bottled in Lexington, Kentucky.
Rare Character is a non-distilling producer co-founded in 2021 by bartender Pablo Moix with Peter Nevenglosky. Moix tested several strengths for this rye and settled on 101 proof for cocktails such as the Manhattan, Old Fashioned and Vieux Carré, though it also drinks neat.
Tasting notes describe warm rye spice, toasted oak and caramelised sugar on the nose; caramel, honeyed grain, vanilla and cracked black pepper on the palate; and a long, warm finish of baking spice, dark wood and caramel.
